True, it’s hard to say with a straight face that the players shouldn’t be paid when their coach is getting $7mill/year. I understand practically none of the players who make it to the pros could do so without that coaching, nutrition, weight training, etc. that they don’t pay for, but the optics are bad.I too pine for the old days but things just got out of control. Coaching salaries were the biggest offenders.
BINGO on the bold part. The ultimate solution is a minor league for the NFL and NBA. The fact that major colleges are a free farm system for the NFL and NBA has ruined college athletics because way too many of the players in college don't care about a college education and their only real goal is to get to the NFL and NBA. For those types, there needs to be an option to go to a minor league and skip college altogether. What is about to happen is that college players are going to get paid like they are professionals, not college students.
Nobody wants this, though. I think if it comes to that, the NFL will step in and offer some compromises. This is a long term threat to the NFL and NBA. Those organizations have corporate sponsor money. Universities have wealthy boosters with sentimental incentives to give and an endless network into upcoming players.
When the universities ban together (and it's coming) to maintain the alumni bases, continue recruiting and then go after corporate money the pro leagues will be in jeopardy.
When the P5 figures out it can be the NFL, the NFL becomes less viable.
By "anybody" I mean the P5 and NFL (not sure if I was clear there). I think even the P5 understands that you have to maintain some level of 'amateurism' to keep your loyal fanbases. If it's just another NFL, I don't think it's sustainable. So in that vein, the P5 needs the NFL.I don't think it matters what anybody wants now... other than wanting to win. And if you want to win it takes money. The NFL has shown you how to get it and I think the P5 is coming for it.
Find the Supreme Court ruling online, especially Kavanaugh's concurrent opinion, who gave plaintiff lawyers giant green light to sue the **** out of the NCAA. This ruling was 9-0, against the NCAA. The plaintiff lawyers are the ones licking their chops.I don't pay much attention to opinion pieces. They usually have an agenda. The Supreme Court just ruled and the lawyers have not had time to digest what it means. I would not get my hopes up on the NCAA going away. I hope they do but I would wait and see what the NCAA does. The ruling was against them. Their lawyers are most likely looking at the ruling and is in contact with court behind the meaning of what they have to do now or what they don't have to do.

It does seem like a lot of conservatives are in favor of this.Find the Supreme Court ruling online, especially Kavanaugh's concurrent opinion, who gave plaintiff lawyers giant green light to sue the **** out of the NCAA. This one isn't tricky.
I understand. Same here. It will take some years to sort out anyway.
This one isn't tricky.
Edit: The Court basically said the NCAA's business model is illegal.
I 100% agree, but most people just don’t get that. Also factor in how much it would cost them to hire the coaches the get to work with. They are compensated a lot, but the head coach at most schools make a lot of money and a few make stupid money while the players do not receive a large paycheck. It’s an optics thing. No one crying for the players points out coaches starting their careers making $3,000 per year and sleeping in an empty closet on campus. But they do get paid.
Almost $30 to 40k per year
Full tuition
All meals
Full room and board
And a monthly spending stipend that is more than most college students get from parents
I think until the P5's tells the NCAA to go take a hike they will still be around. I could also see the NCAA pulling out of football but keeping control over the other sports.
Grade school athletes usually don't have marketable skills; they are learning those skills. Even the best high school athlete is almost never physically mature enough to compete with a college age or older athlete.I do wonder where this will end. Will it end at college and not affect younger kids? Will high school athletics be changed? Will just prep schools be changed?
Whats the difference between a school and coach making money off of high school football?...is it really just that they make less overall so its OK? If thats the case, then whats the line between OK and improper? Is age the determining factor- 18 or older, then pay em?
I think you will see the IRS become more involved with NCAA Athletes.
