Lot of buzz on The Plains this morning that he is the front runner now.

He recruited my son. It's actually the only school we got to visit period, right before Covid. We spent an entire day there, first day of spring practice. Napier wanted him to commit then & agree to early enrolment. We didn't, hoping to go to multiple camps & take other visits. Of course Covid hits killing all visits, camps, etc. Napier just "has it"... Their first spring practice looked like their 20th. I was amazed how well it was ran.

For those that can't read twitter at work, the tweet says Napier turned it down. I'm curious to what he is waiting on. I don't feel so bad he turned us down last year....ALLEGEDLY.

Damn. It's starting to look like his goal in life is to be the coach at LA-Lafayatte for the next 30 years and then retire. There's very few jobs you turn down Auburn for the hope you may one day get.

I find this hard to believe as well as he turned us down last year. His agent is full of it, IMO.

He signed to play for South AL. We stopped there & visited several times going to the beach. We went to a couple of games & it just felt right to him. Being in South AL, 1 hr from the beach didn't hurt either. He committed in July to "hold a spot", especially with the Covid hitting & this year being a "free year" to all players. Plus my son had a season ending injury 2nd game & South AL stuck with him. He was invited to camps & recruited by several Power 5 schools including MSU. After he hurt his foot, we were thankful we took great advice from his high school coach & committed early. When the old staff was fired & Kane Wommack was hired, Wommack kept his offer. He actually enrolls early, Jan. 18th.

I think his MO is crazy demands and when it doesn't happen he turns the job down. He allegedly told South Carolina that he needed $5M and when they balked at that he "turned it down."

He's not going to get a much better job than Auburn. Maybe LSU comes open in a year or two if he gets lucky.

That must be some of the best undefeated of all time keeping him there.

I actually asked Napier face to face about leaving. He said he had zero intentions of leaving. Because, I actually told my son, the likelihood of this staff being the same if you sign is probably next to zero. Then the school he's committed to fires the entire staff less than a week before signing day.

All I can figure is he is a terrible interviewer, as in worse than Mullen as far as coming across as abrasive, and he keeps shooting himself in the foot in interviews, or he wants to a "have" program, but really doesn't want to deal with crazy boosters unless he has the resources/advantages to justify it. That means no Auburn or Tennessee. Hell, even Bama could arguably be off the list because whoever follows Saban will very likely be on the hot seat if he goes 10-2 his first three years without an SEC West title. In the SEC that leaves LSU, UGA, and Florida as potential destinations, with LSU the only one that looks like it might come open soon, although you never know what will happen. I guess A&M can also be on that list.

Outside of the SEC, that woudl I guess be OSU, Texas, Michigan, USCw? Although Texas and Michigan have their own booster issues. I dont' know. I can understand passing on Auburn if you want to go somewhere and coach for 10-15 more years. That's not happening at Auburn. But if he really was in the running, passing on MSU, USCe, and Auburn is pretty ballsy.

Napier is holding out for Dabo to go to the NFL or Saban to retire. He has ties to both programs and over 3 years as a HC the resume that makes it not crazy. I think Sark may be holding out for Saban as well. There is some smoke of Dabo to Jax Jags as they draft Trevor Lawrence.

Cole Cubelic (former Auburn player and SEC Network analyst) said on a radio show Napier turned down the job because he was concerned about the level of booster involvement and they wouldn’t be willing to give him complete control over the program.

A valid concern, but will he get that at any big job and especially a big job in the SEC?

And if he's waiting on an LSU, Alabama, or Texas to come open, he has another thing coming. No Sun Belt coach is walking in to Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge and telling the boosters what's what.

Well, Auburn and Ole Miss may tie for most dysfunctional booster interaction in the SEC. Maybe somebody is smart enough to realize that there's only so much money you actually need and dealing with Bobby L. just isn't worth it.

He won't get an Auburn level of that anywhere else. They seem to have the most influential boosters around and I'm glad it's having a negative impact on them.

That's some pretty idiotic speculation right there, all the way around.

Texas is worse than Auburn when it comes to mega boosters expecting to run things.

I think that makes my point. We have to leap to the total disaster that is Texas football just to get a good comparison to Auburn dysfunctional level. Texas is likely worse, but that doesn't mean that Auburn isn't nipping at their heals. It is funny to me that these boosters, who think that their controlling brilliance is helpful, are now getting to see how detrimental they are. Think about it. Napier is making 7 figures at La Tech with none of the headaches. He doesn't need another penny to retire in very good financial shape. Short of an ego stroke, there is no reason to become beholding to overbearing alumni telling you how to do what you know how to do better than they ever will. I hope he really turned them down for that reason and they know that is why.

Is it that ridiculous to think that he is pretty happy at UL ? I'm sure he is and will only leave for the perfect deal. How many times have we seen coaches leave great jobs and wind up losing their asses ? Everybody saying " damn...shoulda stayed where they were ?" I can think of several coaches right off the top of my head. I'm sure he lives a great life right where he is.

If Napier has Lane Kiffin and Mike Price disease he should be very happy at UL-L. I have seen the talent and what we call 10’s they would call 6’s. Plus the coeds out-number the male students at least 3-2.
