Gave up no points as DC of Syracuse. I like. **

Edit to add: Syracuse's SBNation site with a story posted yesterday on Arnett: Link.

Maybe he thinks if he pays them well they'll stick around more than a season or two like our other DC have...........

Well.....wow. I hope he is a lot better than I think. SDSU got off the field and ranked high in scoring defense which is good. Not sure how much that means considering the competition tho.

They held Hawaii to 14 points. Hawaii had one of the best offenses in the country. Held BYU to 3. UCLA to 14. They held a lot of teams well below their average points per game. I’m not a huge 3-3-5 fan but with the way the game is evolving, especially in the SEC, I think this is a good move. A lot of athletes gonna be on the field protecting space. Stop rate is awesome. Had top 10 rankings in several major defensive categories.

It’s not a splashy hire but I like it! Do we have a big body to play nose guard and eat up blocks on the roster?

Really good hire! Rocky Long disciple and has overseen some terrific defenses at SDSU. Sounds like it was down to him and the guy from WKU, and I’m glad this is who we ended up with. Not a big name but a really good coach.

Puts a tremendous emphasis on speed. We will need to get faster on defense, but you will see a really aggressive and organized unit.

Their total defense was ranked 5th

Their scoring defense is top 10

For the “who did they play” crowd, here’s a cool list of teams they played ranked in the top 50 total offenses: (6) Hawaii, BYU, Utah State, San Jose State, Central Michigan, and Colorado State were all top 50 offenses that they held below their averages. They only lost to two of them Hawaii by 3 and Utah State by 6.

Numbers don’t lie. I think we got a good one. And he’s about to have better athletes.

Also for comparison we only played 4 teams that finished with a top 50 offense.

He'll be coaching against his alma mater in the season opener.

any of those teams with NFL caliber running back(s)? seems we tend to face really strong running backs.

Some of the replies to this thread are hilarious and very telling. Anyone who really follows college football knows about what Arnett/Long have done at SDSU- hence how Arnett immediately landed a P5 DC job after Long retired.

We just hired a guy who has been learning from one of the best defensive minds in college football and knows Leach really well. SDSU consistently punches above their weight class when it comes to stopping P5 offenses. Look at how they have performed against Pac 12 offenses. His defense is built to get after the passer and slow down spread offenses. Who exactly were some of y’all expecting us to hire?

We will need to get some more speed on the field and move some of the d-ends to pass rush linebacker, but Arnett is one of the 2 or 3 best candidates I’ve seen mentioned for the DC job since we hired Leach. My only question would be was SDSU’s success largely attributable to Long and not Arnett? It would be great to also get Long on the staff as an analyst or something similar.

This argument is just boneheaded

I don't know how good the hire will be but saying a Mountain West team had a good defense but what about the competition is just stupid. It's not like they were playing with SEC caliber players on defense against SunBelt level offenses. The same caliber players that play defense for SDSU play offense for the teams they face. So "considering the competition" is about one of the dumber things you can say to criticize any coach or scheme. /rant

Only allowed two teams to score above 20pts in 13 games. That's impressive in today's football.

vs Wyoming Won 26 - 22
vs Utah St. Lost 23 - 17

I’m not sure. I do know that they had the #2 rush defense and were the only team in the country that gave up less than 1,000 rushing yards on the season.

If you listen to Clay Travis’s Wins and Losses podcast, Coach Leach mentioned he was a big fan of Rocky Long.

Interesting hire. My guess is that Leach first went after Rocky Long after he resigned as head coach with San Diego St, but then decided pursue Arnett. He's a good, up and coming DC, but of course the concern is that he was working under a head coach (Long) who was really running the defense. Prior to Leach leaving WSU, we were speculating that Leach was going to pursue Long or Arnett for our DC job.

I am optimistic about this one. I'm not going to claim this was some amazing hire, but I think it may work out. And I like stealing a new hire from another P5 school.

I do wonder how much of SDSU’s defensive success was because of Arnett and how much of it was because of Rocky Long. But Arnett certainly learned from a great defensive mind and SDSU certainly was great on defense. I think it’s a hire with a lot of upside.

We are going to be running both the Air Raid and the 3-3-5 next season. We will be by far the weirdest team to prepare for in the SEC.

You might want to look again. EVERYBODY is playing mostly nickel these days with all the spread offenses you see.

Good point. We may win or we may lose, but we're definitely going to give a lot of coaching staffs fits the week they have to prepare to play us.

According to The Spirit it was all Long, Arnett never called a defensive set.

Yeah, I guess you are right. What's the difference between Weber State and Louisiana State ? Or Alabama and New Mexico State. Probly not as much as I think. I'm just being stupid thinking they dont remotely compare
