I saw this video on Twitter, and it made me reminisce about the one in Starkville, and I had no idea of its history. Can't believe there was one in Starkville as long as it was tbh.

My Tball team was sponsored by the pig. Huge trucker hats with the Pig head on them and red shirts with the logo front and back. No numbers or anything. We caught a lot of **** from the other teams. Wish I still had that hat

Tunica still has one.....on the way to pick up some things saw the Oak Ridge Boys bus in the parking lot....went into the store and there was William Lee Golden pushing a cart full of snack foods.....nobody was paying him any mind....True story even if I don't have pictures....

We still have them here too. There's one in the little town of Gurley in eastern Madison County. WalMart decided to build one of their small neighborhood grocery stores there to compete with the Piggly Wiggly. Guess who won ... the WalMart is gone and the building turned into something else.

Haven't watched the video above, but I saw a program a year or so ago that indicated that Piggly Wiggly was the first "supermarket", and the first I think was in Memphis.

AKA Hoogly Woggly when I was growing up. There was one in Brandon at Crossgates several years ago that was spotless and had a great deli lunch

I could see where no one would recognize Wild Bill in Tunica....

I can believe it. Saw them perform at Bluesville in the Horseshoe a while back.

Consider the demographics of who's shopping in the Tunica Piggly Wiggly. They probably had no idea who he was.

My two brothers and I all worked for one in Greenwood many years ago as grocery baggers.

There's a little town about 5-10 mins from me called Mamou, LA. There is a pig there, and the only supermarket in town. Clean and good meat counter..and liquor section!

From their corporate website:

Today there are more than 530 Piggly Wiggly stores serving communities in 17 states. All Piggly Wiggly® stores are independently owned and operated, and though they are located primarily in the Southeast, there are Piggly Wiggly® stores and as far north as Wisconsin.

Interestingly, their corporate headquarters is in Keene, NH, probably the most libertarian city in the country. It's a neat place to visit.

Jitney is actually the local chain, not the Piggly.

If I remember correctly, they had an interesting strategy, at least in Mississippi. Many of the stores in the rural areas were simply breaking even. They left them there because they thought it was important to serve the community. They were always closed on Sunday...until the bigger chains moved in and forced them to open on Sunday.

Once they sold everything, the corporate folks from New York completely changed the approach AND completely destroyed the brand.

I think the one in Coldwater is closed.

Been closed for a number of years. The good news is that some group finally bought the building and is remodeling it to reopen a store. That little town needs one again badly. If the owners will just keep it clean, they'll do great.

There are 3 in Monroe county all owned by friends of mine. Legit meat market, you can't beat Certified Angus beef.

Haven't beem through in a fee years except on 55 so I guess I didn't notice it closed. Hope somebody does something with it. Seems like a lot of these small towns in NW MS have more and more empty buildings

Reading this thread made me think of Jitney Jungle too. Also thought about the Star grocery store that used to be in Florence years ago.

Mamou, LA

Aren't there a few in that area? Googled it - there is one in Rayne (wasn't sure if it was Crowley). But appears there are 10 around Lafayette area.

And you obviously aren't in NOLA if Mamou is 5-10 minutes from you

ETA - there is still one (few?) in BR. Not in the nicest part of town though

That's right. I drove from Hampton Cove to Gurley a few months ago and couldn't believe all the construction that's happened. And they're not government housing projects either.

My wife is from Mamou. Good jerky at that PW. A very tiny Wal-Mart opened next to it a year or two ago.

One in Collinsville and Stonewall, MS. Owners are big bulldogs. They have a good plate lunch and smoke meat menu.

This one in Mathiston is still open. As long as we're talking about old grocery store chains...let me throw in Sunflower. I think the one in Indianola is still open but not sure.

The old, old Sunflower in Amory was my first job.

My brother worked Piggly Wiggly in Smithville and Amory through high school and his ICC years.
