I like Hubert Davis, and he seems like a cool, down-to-Earth guy, but this hire is a head scratcher at best.

It's Carolina. They could have targeted some big names. Not an easy gig to start a head coaching career with.

It was never going to be anyone but a UNC guy. Roy Williams wanted him to be the next coach. Kudos to UNC for listening to Roy and others.

Say what you want about Cal now but Hubert was wrong about Kentucky not being a Championship contender in 2009.

UNC always hires from within the UNC family.

Dean Smith was Frank McGuire’s assistant in the 50s, then got the job when McGuire retired. Then Smith’s longtime assistant Bill Guthridge gets the job when Dean retired. Then former UNC player and assistant coach Matt Doherty gets the job when Guthridge retires. Then former UNC assistant Roy gets it after Doherty. And now they go with yet another former UNC player and assistant coach.

I would imagine there was tremendous pressure on UNC administration to make this a "diversity hire". UNCheats is a notoriously "woke" campus anyway so, I can see how anything less would have caused an uproar that would have cast the program in a bad (although unjustified) light.
Regardless of his skin color, Davis is a VERY risky hire. No resume to speak of and you put him in charge of running one of the top 4 programs in college basketball? How about recruiting? How about his offensive system? I assume he'll run the Dean Smith style of offense? If I'm a UNCheats fan (God forbid), this hire makes me as nervous as a cat on a hot plate.

Wonderful hire for everyone but UNC. Fired by year four, I’d figure. Maybe five. I can’t see him having enough success to build a title contender.

we REALLY need to take advantage of this, play and beat UNC, and get their share of east coast recruits.

Hubert was the one I hoped they would pick. Cheats will be mediocre for years now.

Called this on Day One -- the Woke Solution.

I can't find the clip on Youtube of that time on College GameDay in the John Wall year where Hubert was forced to admit that nothing in Carolina basketball could compare with the Rupp crowd -- many hours before the game. I can almost quote him: "I went to North Carolina - North Carolina - but I've never seen anything like this!"

It'd make a nice meme.
Here ya go brother.

Nevermind, I see you found it.

So, I visited the Tar Heel board and they are all cautiously optimistic but overflowing with "family love." Yep, it stayed in the family but the family has a ton of skeletons in the closet.
Yeah, like Indiana fans think hiring 63-year-old Woodson with zero college experience is a home run.

Let's put it this way: On paper Matt Doherty was a much better hire: He actually had head coaching experience at Notre Dame and had done reasonably well. Hubert has experience kibbitzing with Digger Phelps on College GameDay.

Seemingly weak hire for sure. I believe it has more to do with the current culture and state of affairs in America than it does basketball acumen. The guy has more experience bullshitting with the game day crew than coaching. Wow.

Carolina is one of the top jobs in the country. UNC just went woke. Zero head coaching experience. Just wow with this hire.
I wonder will dook go the same route when count chocula finally quits.

This is a bizarre hire. If Cal left and UK hired someone with a Hubert Davis type resume, the people would riot in the streets of Lexington. I don't understand how any Carolina fan could think this is an acceptable hire. But if they want to hire someone totally unproven, I say more power to them. That should only make life easier for us in the coming years.

It’s the current state of affairs in this country. There is really no denying it given Davis’ lack of coaching resume. It’s really crazy. I’m sure Ole Roy pushed it because it will make him look great.
