He’s referred to UK before as Camelot.
He's buttering us up so we'll all just forget that he coached at UofL and flipped off the fans at Rupp.
That was while he chased the women.
Celtics and Lakers are the only two NBA jobs even better than UK. This is the 3rd best basketball coaching gig on Earth IMO. Pitino had the option to go get one of those 2 jobs, never blamed him for that. Id welcome him back in a heartbeat. I dont have a problem seperating Louisville from us. Pitino had an incredible run here.
Only thing about that is what would have happened if the draft lottery would have turned out differently and he ended up with Tim Duncan.

I think he truly believes it and regrets ever leaving. He didn’t pick UL as a random choice to come back to college. He wanted to be as closer to us as possible. If he had gone to say Ohio st or some acc team I think he would Have ended up back in Lexington.
Or did he unleash the greatest plot of all time to bring down their program

He was at Louisville 16 years and won zero titles and lost to Cal on a regular basis including twice in the NCAA tournament when it really mattered. He brought stripper gate to Louisville and left them on probation with the NCAA and a vacated title. He did more for Kentucky fans at Louisville than he ever could by staying at Kentucky. Thanks Rick for everything you did at Louisville. You are my hero.

I've said that for years. Had he followed through and taken the job at Michigan, which he had verbally accepted, we would have had him back in 2008 when Tubby began to fade. His going to Louisville bared him from ever returning to Lexington.

And just last week there was a couple on here complaining about how Pitino always talks so bad about UK.

The same number he won at Louisville. If he is so good why did he coach 16 years at Louisville and win 0 titles. Lost over 80 percent of the time to Cal. By trying to keep up with Cal he began cheating and ended up putting that program on probation.
Louisville is an inferior program. Thats like saying "well if you think youre Porche is so fast how come it cant beat my Lamorghni"
I wouldn't take Rick over Cal right now, but if Cal left for the NBA I wouldn't oppose it.
He is, but he doesn't hate on UK like someone (ahem) was saying last week. He's complimented UK more than any coach in America, but a flip of the bird one game and he's Hitler.
Loved it when Rick was with the Celtics and told the fans "that Greg Kite was not walking through the door".
Wish he never left, perhaps a blessing in disguise that he did. I hesitate to want him back now. Too many rivers

File me under the category of hating Coach K more then Pitino. He did go to Louisville, he did flip the crowd off at Rupp. But don't let time erase what he brought us back from in the 90s. He was a vital part of our program.
He had an amazing run here. Unfortunately, the younger fans don’t understand how magical it was and some older fans have blocked it out because of his time at U6. Personally, I’m glad he’s at a place like Iona now so I can root for him.
With all due respect, and this is coming from someone who gives zero ***** about the NBA, the Lakers gig is absolutely better. The Celtics gig is certainly debatable. All that being said, again, I dont really care. Cant stand the NBA, but objectively, the statement is true.

I’m not sure what makes either “better”. I guess perhaps because big name free agents seem to love LA you could make a case for the Lakers. The Celtics are my favorite team but I can’t see how a coach like Cal would have a better chance to win championships there than at UK.
I assumed it would be reverse for fans not in our age group (mid 30s.) Younger fans really only remember him being at Louisville so they dont have any attachment. Older fans have more perspective being able to see what he did post Joe B (Tubby esque results) and Eddie. Plus having even more recollection of Lousivlle being a small conference school. Myself, my earliest memories are of Pitinos Bombinos. I dont remember Eddie or Joe ever being on the sideline even though I was alive and my dad took me to games.
So, like I said in my first post, its possible that being a kid and teenager that I remember those years with more fondness than they merit, but I dont think so. Pitino absolutely ran roughshod across the SEC in 7 of his 8 yrs here. When I see Cal recruiting talent that surpasses what Rick had here, yeah, I expect us to have won the SEC more times than we have. Turn these guys loose Cal, quit dribbling out the shot clock to end games. This isnt football.
Well I’m almost 52 for better or worse. I absolutely love John Calipari so I have no knock on him. But there was something about the Pitino era that was magical. Perhaps it was related to the style of play. But remember, the time of his hiring was a dark time for UK basketball. We were going on probation, we were 13-19 in 1989 and some people believed that UK basketball as we had known it was gone. We were in the mode of appreciating it in a whole different way. Now, we’re back in the mode of taking being in the top 10 for granted, which is good that we have that luxury. But think of what Indiana basketball has become over the last 30 years. If we had made the wrong hire in 1989 we might have become Indiana. He was the exact man we needed when we needed him. I’ll never forget that. And now that he’s disassociated with U6 I’m ready to welcome him back into the family.
Oh theres no doubt we are taking Cals run for granted. I know I am. But like I said, and you just pointed out, you remember the whole lead up to Pitino's hiring and how we hung on knife's edge from turning into IU. Myself, I know our history, but my memory goes back to Gimel Martinez's mustache as far as when UK basketba began. So I think older fans and fans my age (sorry, I interpreted part of your post as saying you were around my age) can more easily view UK Rick wholly seperate from UofL Rick. Younger fans in their 20s or at UK now dont even remember him at UK. Those 8 yrs were absolutely magical. UofL or not, Im not gonna write off what he did here. And yes, his 8 yrs were better IMO than any 8 Cal has given us. JMO. And im not saying that as a knock on Cal. Cal's time here has been amazing. Its just that UK under Pitino was that damn incredible and exciting. Running teams off the court by 20-30 pts constantly. Absolutely dominating the SEC without question. It was just a great time for UK basketball. Those teams ran and pressed and scored. And bombed the 3 ptrs!
